Lost in Lots of Work

2 weeks into Uni and I am already worrying that I have no work!

I have a glossary of textile terms on my tablet, A research file which on an iMac, a Knit research and development, a few samples, and a folder full of papers about textiles which I need to read…

Yarn Wraps

Yarn Wraps

I created my first samples this week after meticulously picking the yarns which match my colour palette. I like the yarns as they are displayed together however I found it really difficult to pull out two or three colours which work well together and when you separate the yarns out into a knitted piece I really didn’t like any of the colours or any of my samples.

Smocking with Silk

Smocking with Silk

I was given a load of old patterns for jumpers, hats, skirts, all sorts of outdated garments and in the pile was this smocking pattern for a skirt. I really like the effect it gives the knit. I felted one piece and left the other piece as it was and I like how the piece is pulled into the frill by the use of different tensions. This is lost in the felted piece but this also has a much nicer honeycomb pattern and I like the difference between the felted diamond pattern and smocked knit.

I was also learning how to do frills using the ribber attachment and I want to experiment with this more to see the different effect I can get in to edge of the piece. I used 3 colours in this and I like how the darkness is diluted by the silkier and softer yellow colour on the outside.

I still really don’t like the mix of colours and think that I need to go back to the starting block and pick out some different yarns again. I need to be really particular and limited in the colours that I use and perhaps only use one or two accent colours.

Experimenting with Invisible Zippers

So today I hot footed it down to the Haberdashery shop and purchased all the invisible cream zips they had to sew into my cushions.

Back home and I pressed the zips (this allows you to sew closer to the teeth and also helps the zipper pull the fabric closed over the zip once finished), pinned them and stitched them into place.

Here is the result. I was quite impressed with the finished look as I think it looks a lot more professional than the zips I was using before and it requires around the same amount of fuss as the open ended zips I was using before.

This is my double sided square stripe design which is the first pattern I am completely happy with. The others are still in need of a little tweaking before I send them out to the big wide world.

I am really happy with these cushions now. The are knitted with Lambswool and are really soft and comfy with a Duck Feather inner.
